Solution Feature
  • We recommend to use "Bluetooth Beacon on Tunnel Wall" solution because of its advantages on (i) Friendliness to Vehicle Owners & the Public; (ii) Ease of Deployment & Maintenance etc.
  • Bluetooth Beacon is the only commercialized technology for tunnel indoor positioning; nowadays Bluetooth Beacon are deployed in more than 15 tunnels in different cities of the world.
  • “GPS Repeater & GPS Simulator” appears to be the best solution by covering a tunnel continuously; but it actually only covers only very limited “Zones” inside the tunnel; "Bluetooth Beacon" cover significantly more zones.
  • For Cross Harbour Tunnel with 1.9km length, ~100 beacons are needed if beacons are placed at both sides of the tunnel each at 40-meter spacing, resulting in 50 indoor position zones.
  • To implement also speed measurement for vehicles like public buses, “Odometer Pulse Counter” or CAN-BUS data can be used to get real-time speed for buses; together with Beacon ID and Indoor Position, Over-speeding alert inside tunnel can be triggered.
Trial Application and Expected Outcome
  • We can select a tunnel and stick 10 Bluetooth Beacons for trial; as a result, a vehicle passing by can get indoor position for 5 zones when passing-by the trial area.
  • We can make use of a GPS Tracker that comes with Odometer Pulse or CAN-BUS interface for getting speed, a “Over-speeding inside tunnel alert” could be triggered during trial.
