  • BATched Sparse Code (BATS) is a patented technology that offers novel wireless data transmission technology. It can be applied to smart lampposts.
  • Providing network connectivity to smart lampposts is a big challenge: laying optical fibre is not only expensive, but also requires much construction work.
  • Another challenge is that capacity, stability and performance of the existing wireless communication solutions (e.g. WiFi, LoRa, NB-IoT) could be concerns.
  • BATS could allow for a small number of the lampposts to connect to the network by fiber, while the others communicate to each other using BATS. BATS provides fast, stable and cost-effective communication technology for smart lampposts.
Matched Trial Project
  • HKSAR Government is progressively installing about 400 multi-functional smart lampposts in four urban locations in 2019-2022.
  • The first 50 smart lampposts come into operation in Kwun Tong and the Kai Tak Development Area in June 2019.
  • Smart lampposts with BATS are easy to deploy without the need to lay optical fibre.
  • BATS provides highly scalable bandwidth: 100 times higher than LoRa and 20 times higher than NB-IoT.
