Summary and Challenges

The objective of the project is to provide a top-quality advanced material for the construction of the rear loader of a refuse collection vehicle, including the hopper and the rear of the body (e.g. tail gate), taking into consideration the following operating conditions:

  • (i) high water content of food residue in the domestic wastes that the inner surface of the hopper and body rear would have direct contact with;
  • (ii) mixed solid contents including metals/hard plastics/wood in the domestic wastes carried inside the hopper, which will cause much impact and abrasion on the inner surface when the compactor and scrappers operate inside the hopper; and
  • (iii) the material should have extremely high impact and abrasion resistance. Its tensile strength should also be able to withstand the static and dynamic loading of the hopper during the loading and unloading operation. To facilitate the need for servicing, the alloy steel or the proposed material should be weldable and reparable when it is worn after prolonged use.
