Summary and Challenges
  • Hiker safety system is sought to develop IoT tracking devices with mobile application and comprehensive management platform for offering hiker location tracking and SOS services.
Expected Outcome The system is expected to achieve the following:

IoT tracking devices:

  1. Adopt LoRaWAN technology for data transmission;
  2. Obtain real-time GPS positioning and timing information from mobile phone via Bluetooth connection;
  3. Equipped with SOS button and indicator lights for device status;
  4. Battery life: at least 5 days with re-chargeable / replaceable battery;
  5. Water resistance: IP65 or above;
  6. Durability: Outdoor environment under intensive sunlight; and
  7. Small in size, light weight and handy.

Operation mode of IoT tracking devices with Mobile Application:

  1. For user and device registration;
  2. Support location information, geo-fencing alert and SOS alert status display of individual users and sharing within user groups;
  3. Support transmission of location information and SOS alert to backend server when operating in outdoor areas with cellular network and/or LoRa network coverage via mobile phone and IoT tracking device.

Web-based system management platform:

  1. Support device management, data visualization, Email/SMS/Instant Message notification for SOS & geo-fencing alert as well as report generation and so on for providing useful information to rescue team if the need arises.
