Summary and Challenges
  • Hiker safety system is sought to develop IoT tracking devices with mobile application and comprehensive management platform for offering hiker tracking and SOS services.
Expected Outcome IoT tracking devices:
  1. Adopt LoRaWAN technology for data transmission;
  2. Adopt one of the GNSS technologies for accurate outdoor positioning with accuracy within 5 meters and acquiring timing information from GNSS;
  3. Equipped with SOS button and support receiving geo-fencing alert;
  4. Battery life: at least 5 – 10 days with re-chargeable battery;
  5. Water resistance: IP66 or above; (f) Durability: Outdoor environment under intensive sunlight;
  6. Preferred to be wearable in bracelet type; and
  7. Support two operation modes: standalone mode with tracker device only and enhanced mode with tracker device & mobile app via pairing with mobile phone using Bluetooth.
Mobile Application (for enhanced mode) :
  1. The following features shall be supported in mobile application in offline mode with LoRa network coverage:
    • Group-chat function such that the users could communicate with peers through text-based message;
    • Location sharing such that the users can visualize their own and peers locations on an offline map;
    • SOS alert such that the users could receive the alert from peers and send SOS alert to service centre; and
    • Geo-fencing alert such that the user could receive the alert being triggered by their own or peers.
  2. At areas without LoRa network coverage, the mobile application shall be automatically switch to data transmission via mobile network with service centre. Platform for Service Centre A web-based platform should be provided as service centre for managing the tracking data, SOS alert and geo fencing functions and corresponding reporting to rescue team if the need arises.
