Summary and Challenges
  • Several cases of dump truck overturning incidents were occurred in worksites in recent years. The probable causes include overloading, uneven ground conditions, uneven loading in the dump box and tilting on sloping ground.
  • In CEDD worksites, such as reclamation projects, there are in-house dump trucks and also dump trucks from external parties.
  • Some in-house dump trucks have precautionary systems installed such as various sensors and alarm system to alert the operators.
  • However, there are no measures to alert the operators of external dump truck while entering the works sites.
  • We would therefore like to explore the possibility of developing a plug-and-play system that could be easily installed and uninstalled on external dump trucks. The proposed system should be able to detect potential overturning risks and alert the operators of dump trucks in advance.
Expected Outcome
  • Development of a plug-and-play system that could be easily installed and uninstalled on dump trucks entering and leaving CEDD worksites.
  • The system shall include sensors that could detect potential overturning risks of dump trucks, e.g., bi-lateral over-inclination, uneven ground, uneven loading, etc.
  • Alarm system shall alert the driver and relevant site management staff of the dump truck when such risks were detected.
