Summary and Challenges
  • Sai Kung Sewage Treatment Works is currently receiving private tankers for the disposal of domestic liquid waste. The discharge of domestic liquid waste is done through temporary piping connected to the tanker. After discharge, any remaining liquid waste in the pipes may spill onto the tanker's body and the road surface. If not cleaned, the dried liquid waste will pollute the road surface and cause various environmental hygiene and odor issues.
  • Therefore, manual water jet cleaning of the tanker and surrounding areas is necessary before the tanker leaves the designated discharge area. Due to the high number of tanker received everyday, this requires a heavy manpower input. Moreover, due to space constraints and the complexity of the installation work, a fixed water jet cleaning system is not appropriate. An automatic robot cleaning solution is currently being sought.
Expected Outcome
  • The robot should be able to pick up a water hose and open the valve to perform the cleaning task. The robot's body should have enough strength and protection to prevent splashed sewage from entering during the cleaning process. The robot should be able to clean the wheels of the private tanker parked at the designated area.
  • After cleaning, the robot should be able to return to the depot for charging without blocking road access. As the discharge area is close to the carriageway, the robot should be able to detect the surrounding environment in real-time, anticipate and avoid any approaching traffic during the cleaning process.
  • After implementing the automatic cleaning robot, the body of the private tanker should be cleaned more thoroughly. The liquid waste on the road surface in the designated discharge area should be reduced, thus mitigating hygiene and odor issues.
Expected Trial Duration 12-month
