Trial Project
Summary and Challenges
  • This project aims to develop a robotic solution for automatic welding, sandblasting, and coating application of steel pipes with a diameter ranging from 700mm to 900mm.
  • The objective is to enhance the welding quality and occupational safety of workers by replacing the current practice of manual welding, power-tool cleaning, and internal coating application of steel pipes.
Expected Outcome
  • The robot should be designed, developed, constructed and able to carry out the following tasks:
    1. Enter a steel pipe of 8m long and conduct automatic internal welding (fillet welding) for pipes with diameters ranging from 700mm to 900mm. Details of welded spherical spigot and socket of steel pipe and fillet weld to be conducted by the robot is shown in the page 1 of WSD standard drawing No.1.21.  (Please copy and paste the link to the internet browser: https://www.wsd.gov.hk/filemanager/en/content_1599/WSD0121-E.pdf
    2. Perform sandblasting for pipe internal surface of pipes with diameters ranging from 700mm to 900mm.
    3. Apply spray coating on the internal surface of pipes with diameters 700mm to 900mm.
Expected Trial Duration 12-month
