Fibre Optic Sensing System - Operation Condition Monitoring and Analysis of Power Distribution Network (REF:C-0020)
E&M InnoPortal Trial Project Ref. No.:

Overview

An invention leverages fibre optic sensor that is non-destructive and maintenance free component to measure temperatures of power cable and busbar inside a switchboard. With the aid of Power Quality and Energy Management System (PQEMS), real-time temperature trends can be monitored to derive predictive maintenance strategy. This proactive approach helps pinpoint the electrical fault location and thus reduces the potential for inadvertent power outage and hence service interruption.

Problem Addressed Periodic inspection and testing ensure the health and safety of power distribution facilities in case where potential faults (arc faults and overheat conditions) in the switchboard are not clearly visible, that can lead to power outage and fires. This novel invention helps monitor and pinpoint electrical fault locations by means of advanced pattern analysis of thermal profiles to enhance the overall reliability.
Innovation The invention develops a fibre optic temperature sensing system for monitoring health condition of power cables and low voltage switchboards operating in public hospitals and healthcare institutions. The system includes fibre optic temperature sensors, fibre optic tail cables, optical splitters, fibre optic trunk cables, data analytic units and graphical user interface terminal. The optical and data analytic units perform spectral analysis on the received optical signals and translate into thermal profile/trends enabling early remedial action be taken.
Key Benefits
  • Pinpoint potential fault locations to enhance maintenance efficiency
  • 24x7 real-time condition monitoring for abnormalities
  • Predictive maintenance by means of advanced pattern analysis of thermal profiles and maximise electrical system uptime
