The integration of Flexible Photovoltaic (PV) installation, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Multi-trade Integrated Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MiMEP) in buildings addresses the key challenge faced by the existing structures - their limited spare structural loading capacity, which often cannot support conventional PV installations.
The solution leverages lightweight and flexible PV modules, which not only circumvent the abovementioned issue but also demonstrate competitive module efficiency akin to conventional monocrystalline PV modules.
| Problem Addressed | To contribute to Hong Kong's broader efforts in combating climate change and carbon neutrality achievement by 2050, the integration of sustainable energy solutions is promoted. However, renewable energy installation presents an unique challenge that calls for innovative solutions. For example, conventional installation methods often involve noisy construction works spanning 5 to 6 months, which can significantly impact the daily activities of building occupants and the comfort of citizens. Therefore, an alternative installation method, with a focus on photovoltaic panels, is developed to minimise disruptions to buildings throughout the whole installation process. |

| Innovation | The major technology and equipment adopted include Flexible Monocrystalline Photovoltaic Panels, BIM, BIM-AR (Augmented Reality), BIM-AM (Asset Management) and MiMEP. The first step involved creating a comprehensive BIM model of the target building for precise planning and coordination by providing a digital representation of the building's structure, systems and available space. Utilising the capabilities of BIM, the delivery and installation process of the flexible PV panels are simulated to evaluate different installation scenarios for the selection of the most appropriate approach based on factors such as structural integrity, efficiency and safety. MiMEP is employed to streamline the construction process and minimise on-site installation time. This involved the off-site assembly of electrical panels and other components in a controlled factory environment. BIM-AR is used as an innovative tool for site inspection and verification, creating an immersive and interactive experience for stakeholders to visualise and assess the installation of flexible PV panels. BIM-AM provides real-time data and insights on the conditions of the PV panels for continuous remote monitoring of energy generation, system efficiency and potential maintenance requirements. |
