Baggage Identification and Tracking system (REF:C-0002)
E&M InnoPortal Trial Project Ref. No.:

Overview

An accurate indoor locating system is crucial for efficiently searching and tracking baggage within the large baggage reclaim hall. However, the existing technologies might not provide precise information on the baggage location.

An advanced Internet of Things (IoT) solution was developed to identify and trace the baggage and the passenger who has taken the baggage. Airport staff can receive alerts or notifications on their portable or desktop devices whenever the baggage passes by. The "Baggage Identification and Tracking System" significantly enhances the level of service in baggage lost and found.

Problem Addressed

Baggage is occasionally picked up by the wrong passenger at the carousel of the baggage reclaim hall in the airport. However, the existing technologies might not provide the precise location of the baggage and the RFID tag attached to a passenger's baggage should not be large in size. A new technology is needed to help airport staff identify and track the baggage that has been mistakenly taken. To address this problem, the "Baggage Identification and Tracking System" was developed.

Innovation

In this smart solution, a small passive RFID tag is attached to each baggage. When a signal is received by the RFID antenna, the location of baggage can be detected and provide an immediate alert if the baggage is moving out from a monitoring zone.

Moreover, the IoT handheld reader supports stock-taking functions and searching for particular baggage. Upon completion of scanning the baggage RFID tags, the data is uploaded to the database for management and reporting purposes.
