Disinfection of Escalator Handrail (REF:C-0046)
E&M InnoPortal Trial Project Ref. No.:

Overview

Escalators are commonly found in crowded places such as shopping malls and airports. Holding the handrails tightly is essential for users to maintain balance and enhance safety. However, handrails, being frequently touched by many people, can become a breeding ground for viruses and contribute to the spread of infections through physical contact.

A disinfection device which can effectively sanitise the handrail surfaces so as to minimise the spread of viruses.

Problem Addressed

In this solution, UV light sterilisation is adopted to disinfect the handrail surface and reduce the spread of viruses.

Innovation

Surface disinfection without the use of chemicals is critical for protecting the health of users and UV light sterilisation provides a safe and effective solution. In this project, the handrail cleaner implemented is designed to be compatible with escalators, ensuring no harm to users and minimal interference with the operation and maintenance of the escalator.

The use of UVC light in the sterilisation process is effective due to its ability to destroy bacteria by acting on the DNA chemical bonds within microbial organisms. This damage to DNA and RNA results in bacterial death and achieving sterilisation on the handrail surface.

To further prioritise user safety, a UVC sterilization device is installed inside the escalator instead of exterior installation. This approach minimises the risk of harm to human eyes and reduce the potential for skin problems caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light.

Key Benefits
  • Enhances sterilisation schedule
  • Minimises the spread of bacteria and viruses, hence improving the hygiene of the handrail surface
