In order to enhance supervision and ensure the safety of inmates accommodated in protected cells/single-person cells of a correctional institution, the Vital Sign Detection System (VSDS) applies a contactless detection sensor for monitoring the vital signs of a Person in Custody (PIC) when he/she is inside his/her cell alone. The VSDS can detect the PIC's presence status, heart rate and breathing rate in real-time, and would trigger alarm to notify operators when abnormalities in a PIC's vital sign is detected.
| Problem Addressed | Due to manpower shortage, it is hard for the Correctional Services Department (CSD) officers to 24 hours monitor the status of the PICs who are high at suicidal risk or emotionally unstable. The VSDS provides a means for CSD officers to remotely monitor the real-time status of a number of PICs when they are inside their cell alone, which can not only further ensure PICs' safety, but also helps to ease the workload of on-site duty officers. |
|---|---|
| Innovation | The Vital Sign Detection System consists of ultra-wideband sensors, system server with software, network connection, display panels and alarm buzzers. The sensors are installed on the ceiling/wall of the cell to detect the PIC's presence status, heart rate and breathing rate in real-time. The measurable distance/radius is usually up to 7m for breathing rate and up to 3m for heart rate in the cell environment. |
