Hiker Safety System for Outdoor Activities (REF:C-0039)
E&M InnoPortal Trial Project Ref. No.:

Overview

Hiker safety is a top priority. The Hiker Safety System for Outdoor Activities is an IoT-based solution that enhances tracking and rescue systems for hiker safety. It consists of IoT tracking devices, a mobile application and a comprehensive management platform. The system enables real-time hiker location tracking and provides SOS services by combining Long Range (LoRa) wireless and satellite positioning.

Problem Addressed

The system addresses the issues of weak mobile network coverage in remote countryside areas, which poses potential dangers to hikers and makes the search process and rescue operations more challenging in case of accidents.

Innovation

The Hiker Safety System for Outdoor Activities leverages the existing GWIN network infrastructure to transmit location data and SOS messages. The tracking devices establish connections with smartphones via Bluetooth Low-energy (BLE), allowing for connectivity switchover between the smartphone's cellular network and the GWIN. This ensures that hikers can send SOS messages and transmit their location data even in areas with weak mobile network coverage. The tracker also achieves a long battery life due to the low power requirements of LoRaWAN and BLE technologies. Additionally, the system incorporates satellite communication for transmitting SOS messages, providing alternative communication channels for enhanced safety during outdoor activities on sea, land and air.

Key Benefits
  • Improves hiker safety by minimizing response times for rescue operations during emergencies
  • Provides better protection for hikers engaging in outdoor activities
  • Brings broader benefits to the community by promoting outdoor activities and adventure tourism
