Solution Feature
  • This project proposed to use microcontroller build an IoT vertical plating system. Each pot consists of a microcontroller to automate irrigation and fertilization.
  • To provide precise control for the vertical gardening system which includes spectrum matched gardening lighting, irrigation control for soil moisture and other environmental conditions monitoring.
  • Through the IoT technology (LoRaWAN and Wi-Fi), long-time data logging and monitoring become easier for further analysis.
  • To construct a system which dedicated for the limited space (especially inside the building) which reduce the difficulties on maintenance and system expansion.
  • The main purpose of automation is to provide comfort to the people by reducing the manual work and to improve the overall performance of any system without the user interaction.
Trial Application and Expected Outcome
  • The main controller is a central device which uses RS-485 bus to control all the smart water tanks and smart pots. It contained a microcontroller, LoRaWAN and Wi-Fi connectivity Real Time Clock (RTC), and storage device to operate as a system master role.
  • The smart pot is a device carrying plants; it is a slave member in the system. It has temperature and humidity sensor for climate monitoring, soil moisture sensor to check water content in the soil for irrigation.
  • LEDs Embedded inside Smart Pot can be individually controlled by PWM, which can control the red and blue spectrum precisely for different planting period such as nursery, growth, flowering and fruiting period
  • A set of white LED is reserved for ornamental use. User can obtain sensors information and change configuration via LCD Monitor and buttons.
  • The smart tank is the main water supply device in the system. It contains a microcontroller role as slave member. A small LCD can display the water remained percentage respectively. Water flow meter and DC diaphragm pump enable high pumping pressure with precise water output for irrigation.
