Trial Project
Summary and Challenges
A sample taken from the rooftop ventilating pipe of the sewage system of Heng Tai House in Fu Heng Estate was tested positive for the virus, which proves that virus can be travelled up through the rooftop ventilating pipe of the foul water stack, before a slow-moving wind sent it back down to the top floors of the building. UV light has been used for sterilization and disinfection as early as the mid-20th century. With advancements in technology, and specifically in the UV bulbs themselves, its reliable long lifespan and smaller size, has broadened the field for where it can be used to disinfect: water, air and a variety of surfaces. Based on the above facts, the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) would like to devise and customize a UV sterilizing device, which could be integrated to a current ventilating pipe system for reducing the risk of spreading virus through the system. The prototype device will be piloted at URA’s projects.
Expected Outcome
A customized UV sterilizing device for ventilating pipe of drainage system shall be designed, developed, constructed, tested and commissioned by the interested market practitioners.
Expected Trial Duration
3 months Note: The design and customization of the device shall not jeopardize the performance of the ventilating pipes system as prescribed in the Building (Standards of Sanitary Fitments, Plumbing, Drainage and Latrines) Regulations and shall comply with other allied regulations. Further collaboration with the contracted party to explore its extended benefits to improve safety and health of the built environment may incorporate as an option subject to effectiveness on application of UV.
