Summary and Challenges
  1. Our department is required to regularly inspect and maintain the overall conditions of over 200 nos. different kinds of signal towers with tower height up to 50m.
  2. Accessibility of the towers can always be a challenge in which the inspection works involved are labour-intensive and prone to human error.
  3. In addition, conducting tower inspection may incur high cost for scaffolding, long duration and more importantly, enormous safety risks on operators.
Expected Outcome
  1. Implementation of drone (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, UAV) and remote monitoring system for tower inspection by capturing the overall condition, especially level of corrosion of the towers, and build respective 3D models without the necessity of human access.
  2. Therefore, it is expected to reduce manual effort, improve traceability, enhance inspection coverage and assist in maintenance scheduling.
  3. Also, tower inspection by drone can reduce inspection time, save cost and most importantly improve occupational safety.
