Summary and Challenges
Stroke is one of the major causes of severe physical disability and dementia is a neurological pathology disease of decline in brain function. Both of them will affect the cognitive abilities of the patient. However, efficiency of traditional rehabilitation would heavily depend on supervised therapeutic sessions in rehabilitation facilities and manpower supply. Yet, due to limited rehabilitation facilities space and manpower shortage, variety of exercises and session hours also become limited.
To address this issue, we hope to develop an interactive gaming system that combines smart glasses, virtual / augmented reality technology, QR codes, NFC, or motion sensors. The system should be easy to use, assess user’s cognitive ability and training quality, and improve the treatment efficacy by using the objective data collected.
Expected Outcome
By integrating technologies such as smart glasses, virtual / augmented reality, QR codes, NFC, or motion sensors, the system should be able to guide the user to perform an interactive game combine with hand movement and smart glasses, including (but not limited to) simple pick-up and drop object or classify the object after identification, which achieving the purpose of providing objective and scientific data for their cognitive assessment and training. The key requirements for the system are as follows:
Assess and train the cognitive abilities of the user;
Provide excitement, stimulation, motivation and enjoyment to those who play them;
Provide user friendly GUI;
Could be played in limited space;
Could be tailored to simulate daily routine of each patient;
Could be tailored to simulate the home setting of each patient;
Record the outcome of each game including the treatment quality and cognitive ability assessment data
Expected Trial Duration
12-month
