Study of Thermoelectric Power Generation (TEG) Application for Outdoor Lift and Window Surface

I&T Wish Study of Thermoelectric Power Generation (TEG) Application for Outdoor Lift and Window Surface
(REF:  W-0503)
Matched I&T Solution
Trial Project
Summary and Challenges
  • Two potential venues are considered in this wish regarding the thermoelectric generation technology (TEG), which include the application of TEG to the surface of the footbridge lift with air-conditioner incorporated, and the window surface of an air-conditioned space. As a preliminary estimation, the installation area of the footbridge lift can be at maximum 1,350mm x 4,300mm of each glass wall (typical footbridge lift consists of three glass walls), and the maximum temperature difference between the lift shaft and the air-conditioned space inside the lift is expected to be around 30℃.
  • The application that could possibly be supported by the TEG includes CCTV, IoT sensors and intelligent elevator movement surveillance devices, that is solely for monitoring unintended lift car movement. Regarding the window application, TEG can possibly be attached on the window surface to utilize the temperature differential between the outdoor air and indoor conditioned air. Considering EMSD HQs as a potential venue for the trial run, the temperature differential can be around 11℃, with an indoor temperature setting of 25℃ and an outdoor air temperature of around 34℃.
Expected Outcome
  • To explore the potential applications of thermoelectric generation technology in Hong Kong
  • To quantify the benefits of thermoelectric harvesting technology
Expected Trial Duration 12-month
