Trial Project
Summary and Challenges
  • Overflowing rubbish bins are frequent source of complaints from Hong Kong residents. They are breeding grounds for bacteria, rodents and pests. It is a public nuisance and unpleasant for residents and visitors , and badly damaged our city image.
  • Our waste collection contractors work constantly to empty the city's bins but they wouldn't know until they arrive at the site whether they'll find an empty bin, a full one or an overflowing mess. As a result, it is a challenge to distribute resources according to real needs.
  • This trial aims to provide a management platform with operational data on rubbish bin usage. More information is provided in the section Expected Outcome.
Expected Outcome
  • Provision of Smart Bin Robots
    • Cloud Data Transmission
    • Outdoor use, antibacterial and anticorrosion
    • User friendly design for loading and unloading of rubbish and bin considering the occupational safety and health
    • Road sweeping and rubbish collection from the ground when the function is activated
    • Collects general rubbish from users
    • Fill level measurement and Inner waste compaction
    • Safety detection and alert features for non-compactible items, e.g. hand, fire, living animal, explosive items detection
    • Anti-collision system
    • Camera for real-time monitoring
    • Detection of hand waving action to call robot
