Background:
During wet seasons, sump pits in vehicle axle weighbridge installations (or "weighbridge") are prone to significant flooding caused by the accumulation of sediments and fallen leaves, which clog the drainage systems.
Persistent flooding in the sump pit poses a serious risk to the water resistant (IP65) load cells of the weighbridge. Overtime, water exposure can damage these critical components, leading to frequent service disruptions, operational downtime, and costly replacements.
Challenges:
Cleaning the sump pit to remove drain clogs is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process. It requires the use of heavy-duty lifting equipment to raise the weighbridge, which not only incurs additional costs but also disrupts operations.
The narrow clearance between the weighbridge and the surrounding main frame further complicates the cleaning process. This limited space restricts the effectiveness of conventional cleaning tools, making it difficult to maintain the drainage system efficiently.
Expected Outcome
To design, develop, construct, install, test, and commission a "grit disintegrator" that will be positioned at the drain opening within the sump pit.
This solution aims to break down the accumulated sludge, sediments, and grits, preventing drain clogs and subsequent flooding.
The machine will be controlled remotely from the adjacent control room of the weigh station, ensuring efficient and safe maintenance without the need for heavy-duty lifting equipment or manual intervention in hard-to-reach areas and harsh weather conditions.
