Revolution of Water Sampling of Fresh Water Cooling Towers (REF: W-0590)
Matched I&T Solution
Trial Project
Summary and Challenges
EMSD’s regulatory role is to carry out random inspections of fresh water cooling towers (FWCT) and collect water samples for bacterial testings (especially for Legionella). The testing of the presence of legionella should be carried out by the laboratories accredited by the Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (HOKLAS) as required by the Code of Practice for FWCT. The tests normally take 2 to 3 weeks to get results.
The objective of this project is to seek for technology which adopting the rapid testing solution that enables on-site detection of Legionella in around 30 minutes. It aims to minimize the risk of spreading of Legionnaires' disease as to compare with the traditional tests.
The technology should shorten the testing duration and identify the total legionella count in two regulatory level
between 10 and 1 000 cfu/ml and
above the upper threshold 1000 cfu/ml.
Expected Outcome
To conduct a field trial test to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the rapid testing solution for identifying the total legionella count which has two regulatory level in a shorten period
between 10 and 1 000 cfu/ml and
above the upper threshold 1000 cfu/ml).
Expected Trial Duration
12-month
