Summary and Challenges
  • This project aims to develop an imaging and ranging system powered by artificial intelligence (AI), capable of producing object images and accurately calculating their distance under various foggy conditions. Dense fog not only reduces visibility but also causes uneven fog density distribution in the Peak areas, thereby limiting peak tram drivers’ observational capacity.
  • To address this issue, a system is requested to raise real-time alerts and notify peak tramway operator when foreign objects are detected approaching, thereby reducing the risk of intrusion and enhancing overall operational safety.
  • The system design should integrated with AI object recognition, depth imaging, and computer vision technologies, in order to improve object detection and measurement accuracy.
Expected Outcome
  • Identify objects inside a deep foggy environment;
  • Recognize objects inside a deep foggy environment;
  • Raise alert in a reasonable short period of time when object was detected;
  • Potentially apply the technology to other area such as maritime searching, seabed exploration, rescue actions in forest or mountain;
  • Reduce the risk of intrusion and enhance overall operational safety.
