EMSD wins eleven awards at 51st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) achieved outstanding results at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, winning a total of 11 awards, including five gold medals, five silver medals and a bronze medal.

Some of the award-winning projects are the successful cases matched through the E&M InnoPortal (inno.emsd.gov.hk). The InnoPortal has been facilitating the matching of technological needs from the Government with I&T solutions from the I&T sector to promote wider application and commercialisation of innovative E&M technologies since 2018. The effectiveness of the InnoPortal was recognised by the numerous awards achieved by the EMSD at the Exhibition.

The awarded projects by the EMSD are as follows:

Gold medals
AI-enabled Smart Water Tank Cleaning Robot
Automatic Control Methods and Devices for Air-Side Equipment Using Artificial Intelligence Technology
Marine Energy Innovation in Power Generation (In collaboration with the Marine Department by the EMSD)
Quadruped Confined Space Inspectors
Revolutionising Fault Detection in Air Handling Units and Chiller Systems in Healthcare Institutions

Silver medals
AI-powered UAV Inspection System for Floodlights
Cognitive Screening and Assessment through the Application of Mixed Reality and AI Technologies
PVSmart System
Robot Giraffe
SafeClean - Window Cleaning Robot

Bronze medal
Automatic Illuminance Measurement Robot

The International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva is one of the most significant global annual events on inventions. This year, the Exhibition was held from March 11 to 15 in Geneva, Switzerland. About 1 000 inventions from 35 countries and regions were evaluated by the international jury of specialists.

The EMSD's winning projects are:

Gold Medals

AI-enabled Smart Water Tank Cleaning Robot This robot is a cost saving and enhancing OSH solution for water tank cleaning. It automatically cleans floors, walls, and lines via high-pressure washing, scrubbing, sludge suction, and spraying detergents. AI enabled to review the cleaning result.

Automatic Control Methods and Devices for Air-Side Equipment Using Artificial Intelligence Technology Traditional A/C systems do not account for the actual load on air-side equipment, leading to over-cooling and energy waste. This AI invention aims to optimize energy consumption while enhancing thermal comfort in the space.
Marine Energy Innovation in Power Generation (In collaboration with the Marine Department by the EMSD) To salvage sea wave energy for sustainable power supply for remote marine facilities. Marine Energy Converter is invented to capture, accumulate and convert sea energy into electricity.
Quadruped Confined Space Inspectors Robotic dogs with gas detector, LIDAR sensor, dual cameras, and mesh Wi-Fi equipment enable remote inspection in confined spaces, minimising manpower demand while enhancing safety, efficiency, and cost effectiveness against potential site hazards.
Revolutionising Fault Detection in Air Handling Units and Chiller Systems in Healthcare Institutions

AIFDD is an AI-based revolutionizing fault detection in HVAC systems. Using LSTM deep learning on BMS data, it predicts early alerts, guides effective maintenance, enables continuous improvement to minimize downtime and enhance infection control.

Silver Medals

AI-powered UAV Inspection System for Floodlights This AI-UAV system automates floodlight inspections using minimal GPS data for routing. It captures HD images, detects defects with AI, and generates a 3D model for VR analysis, enhancing safety and efficiency in maintenance.
Cognitive Screening and Assessment through the Application of Mixed Reality and AI Technologies Conventional cognitive screening uses paper forms that require professional supervision. This invention allows individuals to complete tests independently using mixed reality and AI technologies.
PVSmart System PVSmart is an AI-driven digital twin platform that maximizes PV performance with minimal additional hardware and data. The advance design allow the system to handle PV system with various scale, vendor or region with extremely high accuracy.
Robot Giraffe

Using BIM as an indoor Google Map, this invention can perform cleaning work up to 6m autonomously in confined and dusty area. By changing tools and AI module, the application can be extended to green wall irrigation, inspection and maintenance works.

SafeClean - Window Cleaning Robot

SafeClean is designed for the efficient cleaning of windows and façades including those with non-flat features like fins and edges. SafeClean minimizes the need for manual intervention, promoting both safety and efficiency.

Bronze Medal

Automatic Illuminance Measurement Robot

Equipped with LIDAR and lux meter, users can control the robot on-site for instant illuminance measurements, enabling real-time data analysis and on-site verification, including outdoor pedestrian walkways, and indoor sports halls/presentation halls.
