EMSD wins eleven awards at 51st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva



The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) achieved outstanding results at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, winning a total of 11 awards, including five gold medals, five silver medals and a bronze medal.

Some of the award-winning projects are the successful cases matched through the E&M InnoPortal (inno.emsd.gov.hk). The InnoPortal has been facilitating the matching of technological needs from the Government with I&T solutions from the I&T sector to promote wider application and commercialisation of innovative E&M technologies since 2018. The effectiveness of the InnoPortal was recognised by the numerous awards achieved by the EMSD at the Exhibition.

The International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva is one of the most significant global annual events on inventions. This year, the Exhibition was held from March 11 to 15 in Geneva, Switzerland. About 1 000 inventions from 35 countries and regions were evaluated by the international jury of specialists.

Gold Medals 

AI-enabled Smart Water Tank Cleaning Robot (Collaborative project between the Architectural Services Department, Housing Department, Hong Kong Housing Society and the EMSD) This robot is a cost-effective water tank cleaning solution that enhances occupational safety and health.  It automatically cleans floors, walls and pipes through high-pressure washing, scrubbing, sludge suction and detergent spraying.  It also features an AI function to assess cleaning effectiveness.


Automatic Control Methods and Devices for Air-Side Equipment Using Artificial Intelligence Technology By integrating data from Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and weather forecasts with artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the programme predicts the actual cooling load required for spaces served by air handling units. This enhances indoor thermal comfort in healthcare facilities while simultaneously optimizing energy consumption.
Marine Energy Innovation in Power Generation (Collaborative project between the Marine Department and the EMSD) The concept of this invention is to utilise wave energy to provide a sustainable power source for offshore marine facilities. It employs a marine energy converter to capture, accumulate and convert marine energy into electricity.
Quadruped Confined Space Inspectors Confined spaces often lack CCTV coverage and network signals, making real-time site monitoring challenging.  Equipped with various sensors like cameras and gas detectors, the robotic dogs perform remote inspections using a mesh network in a "dog-to-dog" relay format.  This curtails the need for personnel entry into confined spaces and improves the accuracy of pre-work risk assessments.
Revolutionising Fault Detection in Air Handling Units and Chiller Systems in Healthcare Institutions

The AI-driven Fault Detection and Diagnostics system utilises artificial intelligence to revolutionise fault detection methods in HVAC systems. The system employs long short-term memory models to deeply learn from and analyse building management system data, enabling early detection of system anomalies and the issuance of advance warnings. Staff can active and promptly follow up and correct issues, thereby reducing equipment downtime and maintenance time, ensuring a stable medical environment, and safeguarding patient health.


Silver Medals

AI-powered UAV Inspection System for Floodlights Using minimal Global Positioning System (GPS) data for route planning, this system automates floodlight inspections. It captures high-definition images, detects defects with AI, and generates a three-dimensional model for virtual reality analysis, thereby enhancing maintenance safety and efficiency.
Cognitive Screening and Assessment through the Application of Mixed Reality and AI Technologies Conventional cognitive assessments are typically conducted by therapists using paper forms. This invention integrates AI with mixed reality technology, allowing users to complete the tests independently and provide preliminary cognitive assessments, thereby reducing the workload on professionals and optimising resource allocation in healthcare institutions.
PVSmart System PVSmart is an AI-driven digital twin platform that maximises photovoltaic (PV) system performance with minimal additional hardware and data. Its advanced design facilitates precise management of PV systems of various scales, brands or regions.
Robot Giraffe

Using Building Information Modelling (BIM) to create an "indoor Google Map", this invention performs cleaning tasks autonomously in confined and dusty environments, at heights of up to 6 metres, eliminating the OSH risks of workers. By changing its tools and AI modules, its application can be extended to various inspection and maintenance tasks.


SafeClean - Window Cleaning Robot

SafeClean is designed for the efficient cleaning of windows and building façades, including those with non-flat features such as architectural fins and edges. The robot significantly reduces the need for manual intervention, enhancing both safety and efficiency.


Bronze Medal

Automatic Illuminance Measurement Robot

The robot is equipped with a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) system, a lux meter and customized software.  Users can monitor the robot's operation via a tablet on site (i.e.  pedestrian walkways, indoor sports centres and exhibition halls), while simultaneously conducting real-time illuminance measurements, data analysis, and on site verification, thereby enabling more precise and efficient fully automated illuminance measurement.
