High-rise buildings are commonly found everywhere in today's society, especially in densely populated areas like Hong Kong. Lifts play a crucial role in supporting the daily lives of the public with approximately 70,000 lifts across the territory currently.
However, incidents caused by inaccurate levelling of lift cars have been reported to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) occasionally. In order to proactively address and prevent such incidents, the EMSD has collaborated with a start-up company to develop the Intelligent Elevator Movement Surveillance Device (i-EMSD). This device is a 24/7 real-time lift monitoring, with the purpose of alerting passengers when necessary to prevent them from stumbling while entering or leaving the lift car.
Problem Addressed | The i-EMSD features a variety of electronic sensors, including but not limited to infra-red camera and accelerometer. These sensors offer real-time monitoring of lift levelling accuracy as well as motion and vibration monitoring. The i-EMSD is capable of detecting any significant levelling difference between the lift car and the destination floor. It can also identify unintended car movement. In the event that such discrepancies or movements are detected, the i-EMSD promptly alerts to prevent potential accidents. |

Innovation | The i-EMSD is a low cost IoT device that incorporates video analytics technology for real-time monitoring of the levelling difference between the destination landing floor and the lift car floor. When the difference exceeds a preset threshold, the i-EMSD promptly alerts lift users through visual and/or audio alarms. It is designed to be small and easily installed on the lift car door, seamlessly moving along with the lift car during lift operation without interfering with its movement. |
