Summary and Challenges
The workstation of Air Traffic Control Simulation System requires high graphical computation power which generates considerable amount of heat. Traditionally, the workstation, installed within an equipment room, is cooled by conditioned air which has limited cooling efficiency due to the low heat capacity of air. A low indoor air temperature setpoint is required for air conditioning system in order to achieve the required cooling effect. Immersion cooling is the dissipation of heat by submersion of the heat generated electronic component in a coolant that is thermally conductive. For a two-phase system, heat dissipation is achieved by vaporization of the dielectric liquid coolant. By using two-phase immersion cooling, the heat generated from the electronic components could be removed more efficiently than by traditional air cooling which results in higher performance of the electronic component at a lesser electricity consumption by allowing to set a higher indoor temperature of air conditioning system.
Expected Outcome
To develop a demonstration kit for the workstation of Air Traffic Control Simulation System. The kit is a standalone type two-phase immersion cooling system using non-flammable coolant (Working Temperature: 49°C to 70°C). The immersion cooling system shall be sealed type with connection ports for workstation wiring connection. Studies and analysis on the performance, thermal profile and power consumption for the workstation and the immersion cooling system shall be conducted after system installation.
Expected Trial Duration
9-month
